Critical Thinking Process Test
Educational Resources, Inc. (ERI) affirms that critical thinking in nursing is a process of critical, reflective practice based on sound reasoning of intelligent minds committed to safe, effective care. This intellectually disciplined process is best measured from a holistic perspective comprised of composite abstract thinking and process skills engaged in the nursing environment.
A quantitative indirect measure of the critical thinking process was devised by ERI in the development of the Critical Thinking Process Test (CTPT) that assesses the nurse (student) from the holistic perspective. Five levels of abstract thinking are combined in this test with four critical processing skills to formulate the critical thinking process assessment.
The five levels of abstract thinking measured by the CTPT are as follows:
1. Prioritizing/Discriminating/Informing
2. Inferential Reasoning
3. Goal Setting
4. Application of Knowledge
5. Evaluation of Predicted Outcomes
The four critical processing skills are as follows:
1. Critical Listening
2. Critical Writing
3. Critical Speaking
4. Critical Reading
